England vs India fifth Test, Chris Woakes shoulder injury, Gus Atkinson press conference, video, highlights

England could be without Chris Woakes for the remainder of the fifth Test against India after the pace bowler suffered a suspect dislocated shoulder on day one at The Oval.

During the 57th over of India’s first innings, Woakes chased after a ball from mid-off towards the rope and landed awkwardly on his shoulder while diving to prevent the boundary. The 36-year-old received medical attention from England team physio Ben Davies before leaving the field with his shoulder placed in his jumper as a makeshift sling.

Woakes appears unlikely to bowl again, with the injury threatening to rule him out of the remainder of the Test match.

An England spokesperson declined to comment on the extent of Woakes’ injury, but confirmed he would be assessed overnight.

“I don’t know too much about it, but it doesn’t look great,” England teammate Gus Atkinson said of Woakes.

“It’s a big shame, last game of the series, and when anyone gets injured, it’s a shame. I’m hoping it’s not too bad, and whatever it is, he’ll get full support from everyone.”

He earlier told the BBC: “I will be surprised if he takes any further part in the game.”

Atkinson, the pick of England’s bowlers on day one, declared he was prepared to help make up the lost overs if required.

“Definitely, I feel fresh, I feel good,” he continued.

“I know I’ve only got this one game to play so I can push the limits a bit.”

Woakes claimed 1-46 from 14 overs on Thursday, including the dismissal of Indian opener KL Rahul.

The tourists were 6-204 at stumps following a rain-affected first day in London. The fifth Test between England and India resumes on Friday at 8pm AEST.
