Cameron Green returns to bowling in boost ahead of Ashes series, Australia selection news

They were six words of golden reassurance for Australia’s frontline quicks.

The rich vein of form with the bat from Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green is coinciding with his welcomed return with the ball.

Green didn’t bowl a ball after his six-laden century in Sunday’s ODI, but he did let go of six overs in the nets during the week as he ramps up his bowling volume.

His return comes as the Aussie quicks were dealt a reinforcement blow, with Lance Morris set to undergo surgery and ultimately miss all of this summer’s Ashes.

But Green delivered a brief yet soothing response to that blow when asked how he pulled up from his net bowl.

“Yep … beautiful, back is all good,” Green said.

Green has played all formats for Australia in a jam-packed schedule since his return through the World Test Championship final in June.

He said he was eager to put the feet up after a “self-inflicted” run of action.

“We just got a bit of time at home, finally, it’s been a long four months since I’ve been back playing,” he said.

“It’s kind of self-inflicted for going to County Cricket, I think I was just excited to do something.

“It’s been a big four months. I think we’ve got a week off at home and then I think we’ve got some training up in Brisbane, then a couple weeks after.

“We play pretty much all year round, to get a bit of time at home will be nice.”

Green’s return to bowling is creating one of Australia’s selection conundrums for the summer.

He has batted at No.3 in the Test side, but there is wide speculation whether he will remain there once he increases his bowling load.

West Australian coach Adam Voges expects Green to slide to No.4 or below once he shoulders more bowling.

“If we put a Test cricket lens on it, I think in terms of recent history of the West Indies, that was the position that opened up for Cam to bat three,” Voges said.

“Once he gets back to bowling, is that his best spot in the batting line-up? In my opinion, probably not.

“I think for most of his career we’ve certainly batted him at four for Western Australia to great effect and we’ve seen him have great success at five and six for Australia when he’s playing that all-rounder role.

“Is that a more preferable spot for Cameron once he does get back to bowling? In my opinion, yes, but equally the selectors, coach and captain will work out the balance they need to go with.

“If you ask Cameron I am sure he will bat anywhere they ask him to and I think he’s good enough to do that, but he’s certainly had more success batting in that four, five, six role.”
