It would be one of the biggest signings in A-League history, but it sounds like Sydney FC will come up short in its stunning play for former Bayern Munich great Thomas Müller.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Wednesday night that the 35-year-old and his representatives have been in discussions with the Sky Blues for several weeks in a bid to convince him to come to Australia.

While considered an outside chance, the report added that Sydney FC has been told it is one of the two final options Mülleris weighing up.

The other is playing Major League Soccer and Sky Sports Germany has reported that the German legend looks set to instead start a new chapter in his career in the United States for LAFC.

Still, the Herald reported that sources with knowledge of negotiations said Müller was impressed with the pitch Sydney FC made to him.

Helping the Sky Blues’ cause is the fact they have Alexander Baumjohann as their head of player management.

Baumjohann spent six months with Bayern Munich through 2009 and early 2010 and is reported to be leading the attempt to sign his former teammate.

Current Sky Blues star Douglas Costa also played with Müller between 2015 and 2017 at the German giants.

Speaking to DAZN last month, Müller said he “would definitely likely to keep playing” and added he would like to “discover something new” in a “more distant or exotic” league as opposed to staying in the Bundesliga.

At the time Müller was linked to Inter Miami and while the 35-year-old said he “wouldn’t mind playing with Messi” he denied being in direct contact with the MLS side.
